Course Outline / Syllabus

         
English Paper Presentation
                                
English V is the fifth of the series of six English classes in LTC – UMY. This course focuses on students developing the capability of conducting mini research, writing a research paper, and presenting the research paper.

Rationale and Background    
The students are prepared to be able to conduct mini research, write it into a research paper and present the paper in front of the audience.
Pre-requisites 
It is assumed that the students are able to write an essay and to conduct a presentation.
Timing            
The course is held in semester 5. It runs for 90 minutes, twice a week over 16 weeks of contact time (32 meetings) including a presentation at the end of the semester.

Typical text types used in this course will include handouts from the following sources:

-       Qualitative and Quantitative Research Handouts

Aims   
At the end of the semester, students are able to:

Objectives       
The specific knowledge, skills, strategies, understandings, and/or key competencies to be achieved by students during this course are to:

1.       understand different research approaches
2.       generate an idea of a topic to start a research paper
3.       understand the research methodology which is in line with their type of research
4.       Write a good a research based journal article in accordance to the proposed format of a research based journal article
5.       write a good abstract
6.       write an appropriate in-text and end-text citation based on APA referencing system
7.       Present their research based journal article in front of the audience.


Assessment
1.       Attendance
Minimum attendance 75%. Less than 75% attendance will result in the student’s failure.

2.       Course Work
a.       Consultation (15%)
There will be 3 consultation sessions. Each session consist of three meetings with 10 minutes of consultation for each student (approximately 7-9 students for each meeting). Students do not need to attend all sessions; they only need to come at their scheduled time. If a student fail to attend the scheduled consultation time, the student is considered to be absent for all consultation sessions (3 meetings). If they come at the scheduled time, they are considered attending 3 meetings.
b.      Simulation (10%)
There will be 3 meetings (meeting 23 – 25) for students practicing their presentation. Students should attend these sessions and will earn 10 points at most that contributes to their final score.

3.       Research Based Journal Article
The students are required to write a 2000 word research based journal article excluding reference list. The format of the paper is as given in the guideline. The article should be original and well written based on APA referencing system.
The article should be submitted as scheduled. Should the students fail to submit on time, they will suffer from a 5% reduction each day.

4.       Paper presentation
The students are required to present the research based journal article written using visual aids. It is strongly recommended that the topic presented is the topic of the written one.

Requirements
It is expected that all students will contribute to the success of the course by:
-          listening to input from the lecturer,
-          being verbally/orally active in class,
-          being willing to ask questions,
-          sharing ideas with others, and
-          working collaboratively with other students
In addition, students must
-          attend a minimum of 75% of meeting time.
-          complete all the assessments on time.

-          Introducing different research types and methodologies.

Meeting 2
-          Overview the form of a research based journal article: abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, finding and discussion, conclusion, reference list and appendices. (lecturers show examples of research based journal articles)

Meeting 3
-          Distributing the topic – students should draw one topic from topics given.
-          A topic should display the topic to be researched and the respondents
For example: The perspectives of Nursing Department students UMY 2006 on the importance of dating among young people. 
Students should have found a title for the paper in this meeting.

Meeting 4
Consultation one (1): the first third of the class attends the class to have the consultation. The second half may skip the class. The students should have found the topic, the title of the paper, and an idea on what to write. There should be a discussion on the description of what they are going to do and the consequence of conducting the research on their topic. Prepare the Ss to make research outline.

How to write an introduction: determining the thesis statement and outline (checklists and the component of introduction is provided)
The students should write the thesis statement of their paper and the outline. The thesis statement shall be peer-assessed.

How to write a literature review. The theories in the literature review should be in line with the research questions.


Meeting 9
Writing in-text and end-text citation using APA referencing system.
How to choose the credible academic reference.


Meeting 10
What is paraphrasing and how to paraphrase


Meeting 11
How to write research methodology: Research plan (research approach, setting and participants).


Meeting 12
Consultation two (1): First half of the class. The other half may skip the class. The students should bring the first draft of chapter one, chapter two, chapter three (research proposal) and the questions/questionnaires.
